How to Start an Alaska HOSA Chapter

Starting a HOSA chapter requires just 1 adult advisor and at least 5 interested students. Follow these 5 proven steps to launch your chapter.

Initial Recruitment

Begin by identifying interested students enrolled in health science, CTE, biology, or career exploration classes. Minimum requirement is 1 adult advisor + 5 students.

Affiliation & Portal

Log into the HOSA affiliation system at apps.hosa.org. Use this portal to affiliate members, view account balances, and complete online conference registrations.

Build Chapter

Recruit, recruit, recruit! Utilize recruiting posters, event videos, and officer visits. Students can only experience HOSA benefits once they join.

Fine Tune & Lead

Elect chapter officers, plan fundraisers, organize community service, and select competitive events. Refer to Section C of the HOSA Handbook as your key companion.

Frequently Asked Questions for Advisors

What are the advisor qualifications?

Any faculty member, CTE instructor, science teacher, counselor, or school administrator can serve as a HOSA chapter advisor. Clinical experience is helpful but not required.

How are affiliation dues handled?

Affiliation includes state and national dues per student. Many Alaska schools fund these through CTE program grants, Perkins funds, or student activity accounts.

What is the deadline to affiliate?

Chapters typically affiliate in the fall (by November) to participate in fall leadership and prepare for the April State Leadership Conference. Late affiliations are accepted.

How does Alaska HOSA support advisors?

We provide 1-on-1 advisor mentoring, turnkey meeting agendas, competition guides, state officer classroom visits, and travel coordination for national conferences.
